Turkmenistan and France strengthen bilateral economic relations

Turkmenistan has gained importance as a major hydrocrabon producer in the Caspian Sea region and its energy sector is the most important potential for any future economic and social development in the country and in the neighborhood. On 7 January 2010, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received Senator Aymeri de Montesquiou, Special Envoy of the President of France on development of political and economic relations between France and Central Asia. He handed a letter from French President Nicolas Sarkozy to the President of Turkmenistan. According to this document, France regards Turkmenistan "as a key partner for maintaining peace in the region and energy security of Europe." Analysts noticed that Montesquiou is also the chairman of the group France-Iran at the French Senate, an indication that the two leaders might have discussed about the Iranian nuclear crisis due to Turkmenistan's common border with Iran.
