German Foreign Minister Westerwelle: European External Action Service gives Europe voice on world stage

The European External Action Service today officially came into operation. Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement in Berlin today (1 December 2010):

“The European External Action Service allows Europe to speak with one voice on the world stage. This lends added weight to the European Union as a global player. Europe needs to make full use of its political influence in the world to ensure that our common values and interests are represented worldwide. High Representative Catherine Ashton and her colleagues have my full support in this endeavour. I am pleased to see German citizens in key posts at the European External Action Service, such as Helga Schmid as the Service’s Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs and Markus Ederer as future head of the EU’s diplomatic mission in Beijing.”

The work of the EEAS began today after all the legislation required to establish it had been put in place.
