Elections constituted an important milestone in the vital political process in Afghanistan

The following Security Council press statement was issued today (December 22, 2010) by Council President Susan Rice (United States):

The members of the Security Council heard a briefing today by the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura, received an assessment of the situation in Afghanistan, including the recent election, and voiced full support for the Special Representative’s efforts.

The members of the Security Council welcomed the announcement of the final results for the 18 September Wolesi Jirga elections by Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission. The Security Council members reiterated that the elections, which have been carried out under difficult security conditions under full Afghan ownership, constitute an important milestone in the vital political process in Afghanistan.

The members of the Security Council looked forward to all Afghan institutions continuing to act within their clearly defined areas of competence, in accordance with the relevant laws and the Afghan Constitution.

The members of the Security Council expressed their appreciation to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan under the leadership of Special Representative de Mistura and to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) for the support and assistance provided during the electoral process.

The members of the Council welcomed the continued commitment of the United Nations and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to support the people and the Government of Afghanistan in their quest for peace, security and stability, and underline the leading role of UNAMA in the coordination of the international civilian efforts in Afghanistan.
