EU High Representative Catherine Ashton visits Egypt

High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Catherine Ashton has tonight left for Egypt, where she will on Tuesday, 22 February 2011 meet the representatives of transitional leadership and the government, members of the opposition and civil society, including representatives of youth and women' associations.

"I will urge the current leadership to make progress with constitutional change paving the way for free and fair parliamentary and presidential elections. The EU stands ready to support the democratic transition and I intend to discuss in Cairo on how the EU can best assist Egypt," said Catherine Ashton ahead of the visit."
