France pushes for an international commission of inquiry on Syria

The appointment on the 12th of September in Geneva by the President of the Human Rights Council of the members of the international commission of inquiry tasked with investigating the crimes committed in Syria is a milestone with respect to the international community’s condemnation of the crimes being committed on a daily basis by the Syrian regime.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed the view that the crimes committed in Syria may constitute crimes against humanity. This commission of inquiry, headed by Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, a universally recognized UN human rights figure, will allow us to conduct investigations to identify those responsible for these crimes. They will be held accountable for their acts.

The appointment of three respected international experts follows the decision taken by the Human Rights Council on August 22, 2011, to establish an international commission of inquiry.
