Nuclear terrorism is an increasing threat, Washington summit said

On 12 and 13 April, US President Barack Obama is hosting a Summit in Washington DC to enhance international cooperation in preventing nuclear terrorism.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband is attending the Nuclear Security Summit on Monday and Tuesday. Over 40 nations are participating in the Summit, which will focus on the security of nuclear materials and the measures needed to prevent these falling into the hands of terrorists.

Nuclear terrorism is an increasing threat. Ahead of the Summit, the UK has sought a commitment by participants to improve security standards worldwide, along with a communiqué with guiding principles for nuclear security and a Work Plan that sets out future action, with the International Atomic Energy Agency at the centre.

The UK has worked to tackle the threat of nuclear terrorism by committing to extend the G8 Global Partnership beyond 2012, with a renewed focus on nuclear and biological security. It has ratified the Convention on the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, and the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material.
