Russia - Russian-Syrian summit talks took place
The talks confirmed the friendly relations and long-lasting tradition of trust between Russia and Syria, Dmitry Medvedev said.
Making a statement for the press, President Medvedev noted that projects in different areas were discussed during the talks, including projects in such areas as oil, transport, power industry, nuclear energy, information and space technologies, high technology, and tourism.
The two sides also discussed issues on international agenda. Dmitry Medvedev stressed that a further heating up of the situation in the Middle East could lead to an outbreak and a catastrophe. Russia will continue to do everything it can to help the Arabs and Israelis return to the peace process. Joint efforts should result in a comprehensive and equitable resolution of the conflict, the restitution of the Arab lands occupied in 1967, and the creation of an independent Palestinian state that will peacefully co-exist with Israel.
The two leaders also discussed the situation around Iran, including its nuclear program. Dmitry Medvedev and Bashar al-Assad shared a view that the Middle East should be free of nuclear arms. Any other developments could provoke a regional or even a global catastrophe, President Medvedev stressed. These points along with other issues of bilateral relations were reflected in the Joint Statement issued by President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev and President of the Syrian Arab Republic Bashar al-Assad.
