Italy is a strong advocate of Kosovo's European perspective

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo, Enver Hoxhaj, was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Italy, Franco Frattini in the first day of his visit.

In a long meeting, both ministers talked about the opportunities to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, education, security and culture.

Minister Hoxhaj first thanked the Italian Minister Frattini for the continuous support that Italy has given the Republic of Kosovo in solidifying its independence and its European perspective.

“The relations between the Republic of Kosovo and Italy are excellent. I have invited my friend to visit the Republic of Kosovo and to sign some agreements of cooperation which will further stimulate the cooperation between the two states and two peoples,” said Minister Hoxhaj in a press statement after the meeting.

The agreements expected to be signed in an immediate future between the Republic of Kosovo and Italy relate to the removing of double taxation, repatriation, transport, security, transfer and extradition of persons and agreements on investment promotion.

Minister Hoxhaj also invited all the Italian businesspeople to consider investing in the Republic of Kosovo.

On his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Franco Frattini welcomed the invitation that Minister Hoxhaj made him to visit the Republic of Kosovo. He said that Italy is going to support Kosovo in every field.

“Very soon, together with the MIA of the Republic of Kosovo, we are going to organize in two prominent cities in Italy a presentation on the state of Kosovo, investment opportunities, etc. I will also ask my colleague ministers in Italy to facilitate the procedures so that we can sign some very important agreements for our states as soon as possible,” said Frattini.

Talking about the European perspective of the Balkans, both ministers agreed that the Republic of Kosovo cannot remain the last country in Europe not to have the right to free movement of people and goods.

“We are the only country in Europe not to have visa liberalization. We are the only country in Europe not to have contractual relations with the European Union. Therefore, today, I asked for the support of Minister Frattini and Italy to exert their influence on the EU so that Kosovars do not remain forgotten people,” said Hoxhaj.

On his part, the Italian Minister Franco Frattini assured Minister Hoxhaj that he and Italy will be strong advocates in EU of the European perspective of the Republic of Kosovo.

“We will be maximally engaged so that the Republic of Kosovo too enjoys the free movement of people and goods,” said Frattini.

Talking about the situation created in the north of Kosovo Minister Hoxhaj said that without the dissolution of the illegal parallel structures of Serbia, there can be no peace and stability in the region.

“It is the only corner in Europe, where for 12 years now there have been no democratic elections, it is the only corner in Europe where there has been no census, it is the only corner in Europe where there is no judiciary, it is the only corner in Europe where there is no rule of law. This must come to an end. Serbia must dissolve its illegal structures and should not prevent the integration of the Serb community in the institutions of Kosovo,” said Hoxhaj.

Meanwhile, both ministers also agreed that the agreements achieved in the technical dialogue between the Republic of Kosovo and Serbia should be implemented.

Minister Frattini also said that both states should implement these agreements that are European solutions. Minister Hoxhaj too pointed out that the Republic of Kosovo is committed to implement these agreements that will improve the lives of the people.

During his stay in Italy, Minister Hoxhaj will also meet with many political dignitaries and diplomats from states that have not yet recognized the Republic of Kosovo.
